Winter is coming

Hello all,

We have snow already!!! Yessssssssss!! To be honest, winter is not my favourite time of the year (it is quite dark in Finland and quite often we don't have snow here...) But november and october are perfect months to knit socks ^_^ I can't remeber when was the last time I didn't knit any socks during autumn.

The pattern for blue socks was a pain in the neck, I had to re-knit my socks probably three times until I realized that the pattern had a mistake. (But I think it was worth re-knittinng from the beginning, the result is super nice). My sister told me yesterday when went to a party: "Well, now you are wearing every shade of blue there is."

Red and white socks are an older project that I have to finish, the problem is that I can't remember how I made the first sock.

Early bird gets the worm (free pattern)

Hello,
My busy 5th year in uni has officially started now (well it started in august, but anyways..) :) And I'm happy about it. My summer was full of work and meeting new people and trying to survive in away from my family and boyfriend.

Because I'm already starting to miss summer, I decided to design a new toy, to with bright colours. This idea popped into my mind during one lecture. Try to listen Ob/Gyn lectures with a new pattern design in mind... (It is hard)
I've wanted to combine crocheting and knitting in pattern for a long time, just to see what the result looks like.

I'm not very happy with the legs, (maybe I'll have to redesign them later, if I can come up with a better solution), but all in all I'm happy how she turned out.

Early bird gets the worm (Free pattern)

You need:
Knitting needles (and 2 dpns) size 3mm
Filling
Safety eyes
For the chicken: Yellow and orange DK yarn
Worm: a little bit of green DK yarn
Hat: crochet hook 3mm, red and yellow/orange DK yarn
Basket: crochet hook 3mm and knitting needles 3mm, brown DK yarn

Head (make 1), with yellow yarn
Cast on 13 sts. P1 row.
Next row: K1, (m1, k1), repeat (_) to the end. P 1row.
Next row: K1, (m1, k3), repeat (_) to the end. P 1row.
Next row: K1, (m1, k4), repeat (_) to the end.
Beginning with P row, st-st 13 rows. (If you want bigger head then 15 rows)
Next row: K1, (k2tog, k3), repeat to (_) the end. P1 row
Next row: K1, (k2tog, k2), repeat to (_) the end. P1 row
Next row: K1, (k2tog, k1), repeat to (_) the end. P1 row
Next row: K1, (k2tog, k3), repeat to (_) the end.
Cut yarn and pull it through the remaining stitches. Sew the back seam. If you use safety eyes (like I did) insert the eyes before stuffing. Then stuff.

Body (make 1) with yellow yarn
Cast on 13 sts. P1 row.
Next row: K1, (m1, k3), repeat (_) to the end. P 1row.
Next row: K1, (m1, k4), repeat (_) to the end. P1 row.
Next row: K1, (m1, k5), repeat (_) to the end. Beginning with P row st-st 3 rows.
Next row: K1, (m1, k6), repeat (_) to the end. Beginning with P row st-st 3 rows.
Next row: K1, (m1, k7), repeat (_) to the end. Beginning with P row st-st 3 rows.
Next row: K1, (m1, k8), repeat (_) to the end. Beginning with P row st-st 7 rows.
Next row: K1, (k2tog, k7), repeat to (_) the end.
Next row: P1, (p2tog, p6), repeat to (_) the end.
Next row: K1, (k2tog, k5), repeat to (_) the end.
Next row: P1, (p2tog, p4), repeat to (_) the end.
Next row: K1, (k2tog, k3, repeat to (_) the end.
Next row: P1, (p2tog, p2), repeat to (_) the end.
Next row: K1, (k2tog, k1), repeat to (_) the end.
Cut of yarn and pull it through remaining stitches. Sew the back seam and stuff. Sew head to the body.

Legs (make 2) with yellow and orange yarn
Cast on 13 sts with orange yarn. P1 row
Next row: K1, (m1, k3), repeat (_) to the end. P1 row.
Next row: K3, k2tog twice, slip 1 stitch, k2 tog and pass slipped stitch over, k2 tog twice, k3
Beginning with P row st-st 13 rows (if you want longer legs, then 17 rows)
Change colour to the yellow yarn:
Next row: K1, (m1, k2), repeat (_) to the end. Beginning with P row st-st 3 rows.
Next row: K1, (m1, k3) repeat (_) to the end. Beginning with P row st-st 3 rows.
Cast off knitwise.
Sew the back seam of the leg and stuff very lightly.

Toes (make 8 in total), with orange yarn
Cast on 6 stitch, I used i-cord method and knitted 4 rows with double pointed needles.
Next row: k2 tog to end. Cut yarn and pull yarn through remaining stitches.
I made 6 toes with 4 rows and 2 with 3 rows.
Note: You can knit toes in flat with knit and purl rows or with knit rows.
Sew three toes to the legs (the longer ones) to point forward and the shorter one to point backward to look like a chicken feet. For me this was the hardest part so I used pins to help and hopefully the picture helps.

Wings (make 2) with yellow yarn
Cast on 18 sts. Beginning with p row st-st 3 rows.
Next row: K2tog, knit to the last 2 stitches, k2 tog. Beginning with P row st-st 3 rows.
Next row: K2tog, knit to the last 2 stitches, k2 tog. P 1 row. Repeat these two rows until you have 4 stiches remaining. Then k2tog twice, cut yarn and pull it through remaining 2 stitches.
Fold the wing and sew the side seam of the wing. Attach wings to the body and sew them in place, folded seam is facing forward.

Beak (make 1), with orange yarn
Cast on 8 sts. P 1 row. K1 row.
Next row: P2tog, p4, p2tog.
Next row: K2tog, k2, k2tog. Cut yarn and pull it through remaining stitches. Sew the seam of the beak and attach beak to the head.

Worm (make 1), with green yarn

Cast on 5sts. P1 row
Next row: K1, (m1, k1), repeat (_) to end P1 row
Next row: K1, (m1, k2), repeat (_) to end
Beginning with P row st-st 7rows
Next row: K1, k2tog to end. P1 row
Next row: K1, (m1, k1), repeat (_) to end.
Beginning with P row st-st 7rows.
Next row: K1, (m1, k1), repeat (_) to end P1 row
Next row: K1, (m1, k3), repeat (_) to end
Beginning with P row st-st 5rows.
Next row: K1, k2tog to end. P row
Next row: K1, k2tog to end.
Cut yarn and pull it through remaining stitches. Sew the side seam and stuff. I made from head to the bottom and when there was about 2cm remaining on and then stuffed and sew the rest. After stuffing, if you want your worm to look more lika a caterpillar, you can roll yarn around decreasing rows and then tighten the yarn and then use a needle to insert the loose ends to the worm and then cut the yarn.
Embroider or make felt eyes. I crocheted the antennas: Join yarn to the side of the head, ch 4, 3sc to the 2nd ch from the hook, 1 slip stitch to rest of ch, join yarn to the other side of the head and make the other just like the first one. Bind off yarn.

Hat (make 1) with red yarn
Ch2, 6sc to second ch from the hook
Ch 2, 6sc to the 2nd ch from the hook.
1) 2sc to the every 2sc (12sc)
2)(2 sc in first sc, sc in next sc) repeat around (18 sc)
3) (2sc in next sc, sc in next 2sc) repeat around (24 sc)
4) (2 sc in next sc, sc in next 3sc) repeat around (30 sc)
5) (2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4sc) repeat around (36 sc)
6) sc in every sc
7) (2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4sc) repeat around (42sc)
8) sc in every sc
9) (2 sc in next sc, sc in next 5sc) repeat around (48sc)
10-11) sc in every sc
12) with orange yarn sc in every sc
13) change back to red yarn, with BLO (2sc in next sc, sc in next 2sc) repeat around
14) (2 sc in next sc, sc in next 3sc) repeat around
15) (2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4sc) repeat around
16) sc in every sc
Cast off.

Basket:
With brown yarn cast on 11 sts. P1 row
Next row: K1 (m1, k1) to end. Beginning with P row st-st 3rows.
Next row: K1, (m1, k2), repeat (_) to end. St-st 3rows
Next row: K1, (m1,k3), rpeat (_) to end. G-st 2 rows. Cast off knitwise.
Sew the seam. I corcheted the handle bar: Join yarn to the basket ch 12, join yarn to the other side and make 1 sc, turn, sc to every ch. Bind off yarn.

The pattern is written down in hurry and with probably a lot of spelling and grammar errors and unclear finishing instrunctions. So if you find any errros, please tell me :)

Knitting and more knitting

Hello all,
I've been busy knitting and planning new projects. As you can see in the picture I've made a doll project and started another. I'm trying to continue my stash busting and that's why I'm knitting socks (again). Doll pattern is my own and so is the lemon pattern I'm working on. With the doll's head I made the mistake of using m1 increasing and now I have small holes on his head (next time have to make kfb type of increases). My sisters told me that his feet are too big, so next time a bit smaller feet. I'm so glad to more opinions than just my own while knitting and designing new patterns. And I hope to get him ready soon. My smallest brothers wants that I turn him to a ice hockey player, well we see about that. I'm trying to figure out how to knit skates and a helmet.
I've had a great February, of course I'm busy with school. Tests are coming up next week and I'm glad that after that there is only one test to take this spring.

Stash busting, right?

Hello,
I've really tried my best to use my old stash (trust me, I have a quite a lot in my closets), but today after school I happened to pass by a yarn store (probably the best one in Finland) and of coure I had to stop by and you don't have to be psychiatrist to know that when a knitter visits a yarn shop, she will leave the store with new yarn... And not wiht just a skein
Sorry for the crappy picture, it's taken with my phone so the flash is not the best around..

Spring-is-not-here-yet feelings

Hello all,

I've had an amazing weekend and I hope you've had too. I and my boyfriend went to a Christian youth conference this weekend and it was really great :) Meeting new people and seeing old aquintances and sharing experiences is amazing.
And I had lectures earlier this week so I had time to do some knitting and finally had time to finish my lil bunny. The dress is a bit crazy coloured and with quite springlike colours
. One thing I'e noticed over years of knitting plush toys is that when you finally think that you've learnt to pick right needles to right yarn, something still goes a bit wrong in your gauge and the filling shows and there's nothing you can do about it... But never mind, I think she is still a cutie. The yarn is from Lidl (it is supermarket in Europe, a bit like Tesco in Britain) and was super cheap. I thought it would be pain to knit and look like a mess, but in the end I was surprised how well their cotton yarn works for bunnies.

I've also learn that mobile phones have good apps tp make pics look a bit better and yup, I love experimenting with that while taking pics of handicrafts. You should try that someday :)

Winter and so...

Well, it is totally snowing!!!! :) :) :) and I love it!
There is more than 30cm snow now and I'm so grateful, but beccause it is winter I had to make something that reminds me of summer and this time I crocheted a panda bear. Pattern is my own and still needs some fixes, but all in all I'm quite happy this little panda turned out. I like pandas and well quiten often we (meaning my boyfriend and I) call each other pandas. The reason is that after we've talked on the phone 'til 1am or so and school begins at 8am, you almost look like a panda bear ;)

The books I found from post-xmas sales. The left one is basic instructions to different knitting stitches and on the right is Tilda's Spring (yup, I'm also waiting for spring...). I also found a very good handbook about sewing (my little brother is borrowing that one right one, so it's not in the picture.

For me my Christmastime this year was a time to take a break from social media and TV-watching. You can't imagine how many different ideas or handicraft projects I have now. My patternbooklet got quite many new sketches and I organised my knitting patterns, sewing magazines and so on... So my advise is that if you really feel that your life is stuffed with everything and you think that you can't get anything done, so take a break from TV and start knitting :)

Blessings

January fun

Hello all and Happy this year,

My studies began a while ago and I'm very happy to be back to school. My laptop died this week and I havn't bought new one. I've knitted socks and picked up my crochet hook again. It snowed quite a lot this past week and i really enojoy winter now. It is so comfortable to pick up knitting needles and a cup of coffee and start studying in a warm place and just look outside. I really thank God for that.
My other projects are a few books I need to read (besides school) and I found very good books related to knitting and sewing from post Christmas sales.
And I really hope that after my computer dying I might be able to save unpublished patterns from my old cds
